A Clash of Kings continues the events set in motion in A Game of Thrones. The political chessgame continues, and it seems that everyone has decided to name themselves a king. Underneath all of the power-struggles, something darker is on the horizon. Winter is coming.
Jon Snow is across the Wall, investigating the supernatural events that have been occurring. Arya is on the road, running from the royals at King’s Landing. Robb is waging war against the Lannisters. Bran is managing Winterfell. Sansa is still Cersei’s hostage down at King’s Landing. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons are working their way toward Westeros…
In A Clash of Kings, George R. R. Martin is finally starting to incorporate some magic into the story. (The sorceress/priestess and the mysterious Jaquen come to mind.) It’s a good read, though it suffers from a lack of Eddard Stark.

Obviously, something very interesting is going to happen with Jaquen. He appears to be some sort of wizard, and he leaves Arya to take care of something across the sea. So, is he going to help Daenerys or impede her progress?
This 2nd book is much better than the first, though I liked Eddard Stark, too. His children are developing interesting scenarios. Maybe it’s a little like cutting off the Hydra’s head.
Definitely more fantasy, though mostly teasers still. So many parts of the story I don’t want to spoil. The direwolves are becoming more important. I’m sure somewhere down the road Nymeria will reappear. Bran is a seer. Daenerys will be a major force to reckon with. Still little is known regarding North of the Wall, though the next book should have revelations through Jon Snow.
Quite a bit of political intrigue. What is with all the kings? Unexpected twists all through the book.

I hope there’s something like that in the later books. He seems like an interesting character, and Martin certainly hasn’t filled his quota for wizard characters as of Clash of Kings.
